2. ‘Give Me a Chance’ Charity Golf Day
We invite all members and companies to take part in our Charity Golf Day in aid of the ‘Give Me a Chance’ Children’s Foundation and help support this special cause.
The ‘Give Me a Chance’ Children’s Foundation was founded in 2004 by Delarey and Sandie Brugman from the Alluvia Winery in Stellenbosch, South Africa. In an effort to give back to the community, the Foundation aimed at identifying underprivileged youth with exceptional academic and sporting ability as well as a positive attitude. The goal of the Golf Day is to give a strong financial start to the programme in the Vaal and to introduce it to local businesses in order to gain support. Sponsorship of a child will cost these businesses a mere R5000 per year and will cover everything from school supplies to sporting equipment and school fees.
This will be a big event with amazing cash prizes and a few pleasant surprises!

3. Sanlam Cancer Challenge
Between June and August 771 golf competitions around Southern Africa are being held in aid of the Sanlam Cancer Golf Challenge. This outstanding initiative has gone from strength to strength and the Riviera on Vaal leg was held on 20 June. Over R3 500 was raised for Cancer research on the day and a big thank you to all our members who so generously participated. As usual, Sanlam sponsored some great prizes and our winners in the various categories will be going on to represent Riviera on Vaal Country Club at the regional finals in August and September. They have been very successful previously and are as follows:
Men’s winners:
- A Division – Andre Smit
- B Division – Daan Erasmus
- C Division – Kallie Burger (Our representative at the S.A Disabled Open and last year’s World Disabled Open in Holland)
Ladies winners:
- A Division – Anelda Oosthuizen (Our current BMW amateur South African Champion who represented us at the World Amateur BMW Championships in Buenes Aires, Argentina, in December)
- B Division – Lenie Cronje (Our Ladies Captain)
- C Division – Evelyn Saunders
We wish them luck and trust they will do Riviera on Vaal Country Club proud.
4. Scratch League
Our men’s Scratch League has once again done what many believed was impossible. Under the able leadership of Mel Harper, the Riviera on Vaal Country Club team won the D Division last year, remaining unbeaten in the process. They were moved up to the highly competitive C Division this year and many felt this would be an uphill battle. Not so, however. The last game has just been completed and once again, our Scratch League players have done us PROUD! 11 wins out of 11 and we are once again the champions, remaining unbeaten in 2 years! This is an outstanding achievement in the most prestigious league in Gauteng and we are justifiably thrilled at their achievement.
Our team includes: Anton Botha, Wayne Muller, JP Le Roux, Danie Du Plessis, Martin Langa, Gary Harper, Rudolph Dreyer, Jacques Stander, Jean van Aswegen and Henry Pretorius.
Next year, our team moves up to the B Division where we will find ourselves competing on equal terms with our old rival Maccauvlei! It should be quite a battle and we wish them every success!
